Act V

Scene i

Hamlet and Horatio enter a graveyard where they encounter a gravedigger singing while he digs a grave. Hamlet unsuccesfully tries to figure out who is going to be buried. He plays withthe skulls and tries to figure them out to. When the funeral procession gets close, Hamlet realizs that the grave is for Ophelia. Laertes leaps into the grave, while cursing Hamlet. Hamlet jumps in and they struggle. The whole time Hamlet tries to tell Laertes how much he had loved Ophelia.

Scene ii

Hamlet recounts the tale of the King's plot and how he escaped and sentenced Guildenstern and Rosencrantz to death. Osric enters and asks Hamlet if he will duel with Laertes for the King. Hamlet feels a dread about it, but decides to fence with Laertes anyway. Hamlet is winning the match, when Cladius drops the poisoned pearl into the drink. Gertrude drinks from it in honor of Hamlet's success. Laertes then cuts Hamlet with the poisoned sword. As Hamlet chases and fights Laertes they switch swords and then Laertes is wounded by his own sword. Gertrude realizes the drink was poisoned and tells Hamlet as she is dying. Laertes tells Hanlet of his and Cladius's plot against him. Hamlet forces Cladius to drink the poisoned wine. Before he dies, Hamlet tells Horatio to tell Fortinbras the story of what happened. He also names Fortinbras his heir. When Fortinbras arrives, he takes up the crown and orders that Hamlet be given a military burial.
